Old Car Removal in Melbourne: What It Involves, Costs to Check and What Happens Next

Old car removal is when a wrecker or car removal service assesses your unwanted vehicle, agrees on a price, tows it away from your home or workplace and pays you for it. In Melbourne it suits cars that are too old, worn or costly to repair to be worth a private sale, whether they still run or have not moved in years.

A smooth removal comes down to three things: a quote based on accurate details, a car that is ready on pickup day, and paperwork that takes the car out of your name. After pickup, the car is drained of fluids, stripped of reusable parts and sent for metal recycling. This guide walks through each stage and the questions to ask before you book.

What does an old car removal involve?

Most removals follow the same five stages, from first contact to payment.

  1. Quote. You give the make, model, year, condition, kilometres and pickup suburb. Photos of each side and the engine bay make the quote more accurate.
  2. Booking. You agree on a pickup time and confirm who will be there to hand over the keys and paperwork.
  3. Inspection on arrival. The driver checks the car matches what you described. Missing parts or damage you did not mention are the usual reasons an offer changes.
  4. Loading. A tow truck or tilt tray loads the car. Non-running cars, flat tyres and tight driveways can all be handled, but the operator needs to know about them in advance.
  5. Payment and paperwork. You sign the transfer paperwork, show photo ID and receive payment by bank transfer.

Access is the detail people forget. Old cars often sit in places a tow truck cannot easily reach: a basement car park in Southbank, a laneway garage in Fitzroy, or a back yard behind a side gate. Describe the spot clearly, including height limits, and mention any steep ramps. That lets the operator send the right truck and equipment the first time.

What charges should you ask about before booking?

Many removal offers are advertised as a single price, but the final amount can depend on details that only come up on the day. Ask these questions before you agree to a pickup time:

  • Is towing included in the offer, or charged separately? Get the answer in writing, even as a text message.
  • Are there extra charges for difficult access? Basements, locked compounds and cars with seized wheels can need extra equipment or time.
  • What could reduce the offer on the day? Ask which missing items lower the price, such as the catalytic converter, battery, wheels or engine parts.
  • How long is the quote valid? Scrap metal prices move, so a quote from three weeks ago may not hold.
  • How and when will you be paid? You should be paid by bank transfer or non-transferable cheque at the time of pickup.
  • Who handles the registration paperwork? Confirm whether the buyer will help with the transfer or you need to cancel the registration yourself.

On payment, Victorian law is clear. Since 30 May 2018, scrap metal dealers and auto wreckers in Victoria have been banned from paying cash. Consumer Affairs Victoria’s scrap metal rules allow payment only by electronic funds transfer or a non-transferable cheque. The buyer must also record your identity details. Treat a cash offer as a warning sign, not a perk.

For a closer look at the factors that set the price itself, our guide to how much wreckers pay for cars in Melbourne goes into more detail.

How do you prepare an old car for removal?

A little preparation protects your privacy, keeps the offer stable and closes off your legal liability.

Clear out the car

Check the glovebox, centre console, door pockets, boot, spare wheel well and under the seats. Old cars tend to collect paperwork with your name and address on it. Remove toll tags, parking permits and any child seats you want to keep. If the car has a head unit that paired with your phone, delete your phone from its memory.

Leave the parts in place

Do not strip the battery, wheels or catalytic converter before pickup unless you told the buyer first. The quote assumes a complete car. Removing parts usually costs you more in a reduced offer than the parts are worth on their own.

Have your documents ready

You will need photo ID and something that shows you own the car, such as the registration certificate or a past transfer form. If you are selling a car on behalf of a family member or a deceased estate, you may need extra authority documents. Our checklist of documents to sell a car to a wrecker in Victoria covers each case.

Check for finance

If the car was ever financed, run a $2 search on the Personal Property Securities Register. It shows whether a lender still holds a security interest. Any debt needs to be cleared, or the lender needs to agree, before the buyer can take clear ownership.

Keep it off the street if it is unregistered

An unregistered car parked on a public road can be removed by the council. The City of Melbourne states it can remove any unregistered vehicle parked on a public road or council land. It also notes that a VicRoads unregistered vehicle permit does not allow you to park on the street. Keep the car on private property until pickup. If your car has lost its registration, our guide on how to sell an unregistered car in Victoria explains your options.

What should you do about the registration and number plates?

If the car is still registered, you have two paths. Choose one and finish it.

Transfer it to the buyer. VicRoads requires a notice of disposal within 14 days of the sale. You can lodge it through your myVicRoads account. Without it, you may be liable for fines and tolls linked to the car after it leaves.

Cancel the registration and claim a refund. If the car is going to be scrapped, cancelling the registration can return some money. VicRoads explains that a refund covers the time left on the registration. A $22.10 processing fee and 10% of the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) fee are deducted. To claim it, you supply a photo of the number plates cut in half or a statutory declaration explaining why you do not have them. If the car was written off, an insurance report or wrecker’s receipt is used instead. VicRoads says the refund should reach your bank account within 10 business days. You do not need to return the plates.

If the registration lapsed long ago, there is nothing to cancel. You still need to show ownership and photo ID at the sale.

What happens to an old car after it is picked up?

This is the part most removal pages skip, and it is where a responsible operator earns its keep.

Recording and checks

A wrecker must check the vehicle identifier before buying. Consumer Affairs Victoria bans scrap metal dealers from buying a scrap vehicle whose identifier has been removed, defaced or altered. If a car covered by the Written-Off Vehicles Register is dismantled and is not already recorded on it, the wrecker must record it within seven days of starting work, according to Transport Victoria. That stops the car’s identity being reused on a stolen vehicle.

Depollution

Old cars hold fluids and materials that can harm soil, stormwater and people. The EPA Victoria auto recyclers guideline sets out how recyclers should handle them:

  • Fuel, engine oil, coolant and other liquids are drained completely in a sealed, bunded area.
  • Batteries are removed and stored in a roofed, ventilated area with an impervious surface.
  • Air conditioning refrigerant is recovered with proper equipment, by operators licensed through the Australian Refrigeration Council.
  • Fuel and LPG tanks are drained and made safe before scrapping.
  • Waste tyres are sent for recycling.

Under the Environment Protection Act 2017, businesses carry a general environmental duty to minimise these risks. EPA Victoria notes the duty is criminally enforceable. Asking a removal operator how it handles fluids and batteries is a fair question.

Parts recovery

Once the car is safe to work on, usable parts come off for resale. Engines, gearboxes, alternators, doors, lights and interior trim from common older models often find buyers among home mechanics and repairers. That is why an old car that no longer runs can still have value. If your car has a sound engine or rare parts, our guide to selling a car for parts in Melbourne covers how that affects the offer.

Metal recycling

The stripped body, called a hulk, is crushed or baled and sent to a scrap metal processor. There it is shredded, and the steel and other metals are separated for recycling.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be home for an old car removal?

Usually yes, or someone you authorise needs to be. The buyer has to check photo ID, sign the transfer paperwork with the owner and confirm the car matches the quote. Ask in advance if you cannot be there in person.

Can you remove a car that has not run for years?

Yes. Non-running cars, flat tyres and seized brakes are common with old car removals. Tell the operator about them when you ask for a quote, so it sends a truck with the right equipment.

Will I be paid in cash for my old car?

No. Victorian scrap metal dealers and auto wreckers cannot pay cash. Payment is by electronic funds transfer or non-transferable cheque, and you must show photo ID.

Can I get money back on my registration?

If the car is still registered, you may get a refund for the unused months when you cancel. VicRoads deducts a processing fee and part of the TAC fee, so a car with little registration left may not return anything.

Booking your old car removal

A good removal starts with honest details and ends with the car out of your name. Check how you will be paid and whether towing is included. Settle the registration one way or the other, and ask where the car goes after it leaves your driveway.
